Gimme Some Keys by Matroda gets a vibrant Tom & Collins Afro / Tech House remix with a dense focus on percussion. The Insomniac Recs massive hit’s reinterpretation is part of an entire Gimme Some Keys Remixes EP – a more than self obvious testimony to the releases’ success.
The Mexico City duo has been active throughout the entire 2022, releasing the lush and airy Honey as a quartet with Hollaphonic, as well as the Afro-Latin Se Va and staying on the radars just to drop another groovy banger days before Christmas. And, whether it’s going to be their last track of the year or not, it’s still a graciously executed number that has a lot to offer for both, the fans of the original, and the long-time listeners of the duo.
Matroda’s song, that initially came out as a two-track release – When We Were Young / Gimme Some Keys – sounds much more layered on the Tom & Collins Afro / Tech House remix. It doesn’t necessarily mean that one sounds more detailed than the other, but the overall density of the mix is something the duo is known for, especially when it comes to rhythm-sections. Hence, the remix rather tries to redirect the streams of sound from the keys and synth melodies on Matroda’s track into the drums and percussion. And, as it’s known, when it comes to the latter, Tom & Collins is a duo that manages to inhale the amount of soul and energy into grooves on the similar level the producers like Matroda can do with melodies. It doesn’t take away the atmosphere of the track, nor it strips it off its minimal charm, it just freshens ups the track in a way that you might want to start going back and forth and play both of them on repeat.
