Any regular EKM readers will know that we’re big fans of Chicago Tech House producer John Summit. In the past we’ve covered some of his solo tracks including Revolution, collaborative tracks like Show Me, What A Life and Human, and remixes such as his take on The Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition. Unsurprisingly then, we’re also super excited to cover the producer’s latest track John Summit – EAT THE BASS, a new club and festival Tech/Bass House anthem for 2024 that is sure to please both new listeners and Summit’s long-established fanbase.
With a title like EAT THE BASS, a prerequisite of this track is that it comes with a room-shaking bassline, and Summit certainly doesn’t disappoint. A low, growling throb permeates the entire track, complemented by a solid Tech House rhythm that picks up in intensity during the drops. The main feature of John Summit – EAT THE BASS, however, is its vocal, with one catchy refrain dominating the track throughout – “I wanna feel your body / don’t want romance / I just need to eat the bass / so let me dance”. Essentially the track’s sound is built around this simple but effective refrain, with gritty, pulsing synths and a dark, overwhelming potency elevating the track to something more than just your usual Tech House single. Also notable in this sense is the track’s amusingly morbid cover art, which depicts a skeleton eating what is presumably meant to be ‘the bass’ from a silver platter using a knife and fork.
As the producer himself has acknowledged in the past, much of Summit’s music has a certain duality to it, mixing typical features of the Tech House genre with original musical flourishes. John Summit – EAT THE BASS is no different, in that it includes all the features you’d expect from a new 2024 club and festival Tech/Bass House anthem, but also an underlying feeling of tongue-in-cheek morbidity that lends it a hefty dose of originality.
