Given Ski Babi’s unusual upbringing, it should come as no surprise that the Bass House and Garage music he creates is similarly out of the ordinary. Born Andrew Like in Singapore, he spent much of his childhood moving from continent to continent, amassing a wide range of influences as he went. These influences now positively pour out of the music Like makes as Ski Babi, offering “a captivating sonic experience” whilst weaving together “diverse stylistic elements from a variety of genres”. One such track on which this is evidenced is Ski Babi – It’s Complicated (VIP Edit), one of six singles that the artist has released so far in 2024.
The track’s introduction essentially comprises a chirpy synth pad and a soulful hummed sample of melody, along with an occasional hi-hat part to establish a rhythm. From hereon in, however, Ski Babi – It’s Complicated (VIP Edit) is nothing less than hyperactive, making its mark with a catchy vocal sample as its centerpiece (“are you making love to me?”) and a cleverly arranged if slightly chaotic assortment of various other elements of Bass House and Garage music. There’s a constant bassline growling persistently away in the background, for instance, as well as a speedy rhythm part that’s all clicks and pops. Also notable is the echoey synth melody that sits just behind the vocal sample, adding some stability to a track that would otherwise sound as though it’s running purely on adrenaline. In truth, its refreshing to hear something so energetic but also so genuinely expressive of the artist’s unique upbringing, and as such Ski Babi is definitely an artist whose output you’ll want to take a deeper dive into if you’re a fan of Bass House and Garage music with a twist.
Other tracks we’d recommend alongside Ski Babi – It’s Complicated (VIP Edit) include the likes of Sweetheart, 33+1 and Mount Airy, and if the rate at which he’s been releasing music at this year is anything to go by, it’s likely we’ll be hearing some more new material from this talented artist very soon as well.
