Continental Drift is the debut album from composer and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Krouglow, also known as OTHEOSE. Built around songs that are intended to represent the artist’s own musical voice, the album combines cinematic soundscapes, experimental Electronica, and even some classical elements to create a unique and distinctive sound that truly does justice to Krouglow’s years of experience as a musician.
OTHEOSE Shapes Continental Drift Across Electronica and Cinematic Soundscapes
Across its ten tracks, Continental Drift moves between different shades of electronic music without losing its sense of cohesion. Atmospheric passages sit alongside more rhythmic moments, while live instrumentation gives the production a warmth that stops its expansive soundscapes from feeling overly polished or detached. A track lile Dukkha is a good example of this, combining delicate melodic figures with layered percussion and electronic textures, while Sundown takes a darker, more propulsive route, its insistent pulse, emotive vocals, and weighty synths creating a distinctly nocturnal feel.
From Film and TV Composing to a Self-Directed Debut
After more than a decade composing for film, television, advertising and games, Krouglow has decided to move away from the demands of someone else’s story. That freedom gives Continental Drift a fluidity that allows electronic rhythms, live instrumentation and atmospheric production to coexist without settling into one genre. Rather than sounding like a collection of soundtrack cues, these songs retain the freedom of music made without a visual brief, exploring ideas and allowing them to develop according with their own momentum.
Branches, Counterbalance and What Now? Complete the Album
The album’s final three releases push this sense of exploration further. Branches is an instrumental built around electronic textures and a gently unfolding sense of movement, reflecting the possibilities and diverging paths associated with Krouglow’s time in Los Angeles. Counterbalance, meanwhile, shifts towards human tension, using the production to create a sense of unresolved friction.
What Now? provides the album’s cinematic conclusion. Rather than following a conventional structure, it develops gradually, with sitar and cello becoming increasingly important as the arrangement expands. It brings this debut album Continental Drift to a satisfying close, confirming beyond doubt that OTHEOSE has the capacity to create an engaging release on his own terms.
