Mjoi – Acid Love is the latest addition to the string of Drum and Bass singles that the UK-based DJ has been releasing over the last few years. It’s a simple but effective track that aligns with Mjoi’s aim to bring the euphoria of a festival dance tent into the everyday lives of DnB lovers, favoring straightforward melodies and repetition over complex variation and elaborate production. In the case of some artists’ material this would not necessarily be a good thing, but with regards to Mjoi – Acid Love, it ensures that the track is nothing less than an effortlessly raw Drum and Bass heater with flavors of Acid and Techno brought into the mix too.
Much of this raw energy stems from the repetitive but invigorating chant of “Dance, life, control, dreams” that comes and goes through the the song. The refrain is delivered cooly in an almost matter of fact manner, but this is balanced out by the instrumentation, which features many classic hallmarks of the Drum and Bass genre including fast breakbeats and a gritty, heavy-duty bassline. The Acid and Techno flavors, meanwhile, come from the track’s use of repetition (it essentially moves between two key sections) and fast tempo (it clocks in at around 175 BPM), which come together to give Mjoi – Acid Love greater musical depth than it may have had if the artist had just stuck to the Drum and Bass elements.
As a result, Mjoi – Acid Love is not only a track that Drum and Bass fans will enjoy, but it’s also one that they will want to return to time and time again; despite its heavy use of repetition it requires multiple listens to truly appreciate, and such also represents the extent to which Mjoi has matured as a producer in recent months. “I learnt more than I ever have with one track” he said, reflecting on process of Acid Love’s creation. “It’s allowed me to grow as an artist”.
