Artist Astral Descent has just released a Riddim Dubstep EP under their new alias Gateway Division. Handled by Reinelex Records, the EP has four tracks and is titled Detonate, marking the artist’s first release under this new alias – and the beginning of a new era.
Gateway Division Detonate EP Pushes Into Dark Riddim Dubstep
As the artist’s first release under this new name, this new Gateway Division EP wastes little time making its intentions clear, exploring a more aggressive approach to bass-driven production than that which existing fans of the artist might be used to. Comprising four tracks – the title cut, Catch A Blast, Trenches, and No Escape – these all push the EP into the darker, heavier end of electronic music, having been built around weight and impact. Opener Detonate, for instance, sets the tone with deep, distorted bass sounds and a stripped-back rhythmic framework that gives the low end plenty of space to dominate. Rather than filling every drop with layers, the production draws much of its power from contrast, as sparse percussion and atmospheric elements provide breathing room before the bass returns with considerably more force each time.
That emphasis on sound design continues through to the EP’s closing track No Escape, where jagged bass movements and punchy rhythmic accents create a more potent feel during the drops. The track demonstrates the appeal of Riddim at its most effective, with repetition used as a way of building tension rather than a limitation.
Second track Catch A Blast takes a similarly punchy, bass-heavy approach, combining tight percussion with growling, heavily processed low-end sounds, while Trenches brings another dose of dark electronic pressure to the middle of the EP. Together, these four tracks create a cohesive soundscape without simply repeating the same formula, shifting between more spacious passages and moments of concentrated sonic aggression.
Ultimately, the Detonate EP on Reinelex Records feels like a statement of intent for Gateway Division. Bringing a sound centred around dark Riddim Dubstep through powerful bass design, hard-edged rhythms and an ominous atmosphere, Gateway Division ensures the EP establishes its heavy vibe from the outset. In this sense, this is a certainly a debut that makes its presence felt.
