Fans of Trap, Dubstep, Future Garage and Breaks are in luck today, as we are bringing you a two-track EP that brings you all four of these genres in one! The release in question is PUSH DOMEZ BACK / LUV 2 PARTY by New Zealand artist Montell2099, and it’s surely one of the most versatile EDM releases we’ve heard so far this year.
PUSH DOMEZ BACK Pushes Montell2099 Between Trap and Dubstep
The first track on the EP, PUSH DOMEZ BACK, is based around a Trap and Dubstep sound, with the artist having previously explored the former genre on releases like his Forces EP and UNDERGRND with UZ. Here, that familiarity translates into a punchy, uncompromising approach, with rattling rhythms, thunderous low frequencies and sharp vocals giving the track plenty of bite. It’s the contrast between the two styles that really does the heavy lifting, however, as the swagger of Trap rubs shoulders with the more abrasive, bass-driven side of Dubstep. The result is an energetic opening statement that feels designed to catch listeners off guard just as much as it is to get a crowd moving.
LUV 2 PARTY Shifts Into Future Garage and Breaks
If the first track is all about brute force, LUV 2 PARTY shows what happens when Montell2099 gives his rhythms a little more room to breathe. The emphasis shifts towards Future Garage and Breaks, with skittering percussion, a more fluid groove and atmospheric electronic textures providing an intriguing change of pace. There’s still plenty going on in the bass department, but this time the appeal lies as much in the detail as in the impact. Its restless rhythmic patterns keep the energy levels high, while the lighter touches give the track a more spacious, playful feel.
Taken together, the two cuts on the Montell2099 – PUSH DOMEZ BACK / LUV 2 PARTY EP make an excellent case for the fact this artist refuses to be pinned down to one style of electronic music.
