EXVCT has just released a new Drum and Bass track titled Dread, and it’s a dark journey into the more sinister side of the genre. Arriving just in time for Halloween, the Latvian producer’s latest single swaps festival energy for an unsettling atmosphere, complete with a music video that gives Riga a horror-film makeover.
EXVCT Pushes DREAD Into Darker Drum & Bass Territory
As its title suggests, DREAD isn’t particularly interested in keeping things cheerful. Instead, EXVCT builds a shadowy soundscape around the hard-hitting rhythms and heavyweight bass that make Drum and Bass such a thrilling genre.
There’s plenty of energy here, and it’s channelled into something both menacing and euphoric. Dark synth textures and a relentless rhythmic drive create a sense of approaching danger, while the contrast between atmospheric passages and heavier moments keeps the tension simmering. It’s music designed to get your pulse racing, whether you’re on a packed dancefloor or walking home alone after dark.
DREAD Turns the Streets of Riga Into a Drum & Bass Horror Film
The accompanying Drum & Bass music video takes that atmosphere further, transforming the streets of Riga into the setting for an urban horror film. Crucially, the visual concept complements the music rather than simply providing something to look at. The city becomes part of DREAD’s character, its everyday surroundings taking on a more threatening quality when paired with the track’s sinister electronic backdrop.
DREAD Adds Another Dimension to EXVCT’s Expanding Sound
Anyone familiar with EXVCT’s earlier releases will know he’s no stranger to combining powerful Drum and Bass production with melodic hooks. Tracks such as Desire and the parkour-inspired You Need It, for instance, showed a producer comfortable with emotion and sheer adrenaline.
DREAD shifts that balance towards suspense, showing that his music can be just as effective when it’s trying to unsettle listeners as when it’s trying to uplift them. It’s an enjoyably eerie addition to his catalogue, and one that proves Halloween doesn’t have to be all novelty sound effects and creaking doors…
