Weston & Teston are a Canadian electronic music duo, describing themselves as artists “who like to make everything, for people who like to listen to everything”. And with this new Weston and Teston EP they’re certainly one step closer to reaching the status of artists who have operated within numerous genres, with the new release showcasing their move towards a sound that could be described as Techno meets Future Rave music. The EP is simply titled Control, and it was released on 3rd January this year via The Yellowheads’ label Reload Records.
Weston and Teston – Control EP features three tracks, all of which successfully showcase the duo’s new direction. The first of these is the title track, a dramatic, slowly intensifying three minutes focused around a female vocal sample that urges its listener to “lose yourself in this moment / and let the music take control”. The track definitely enhances this feeling, with throbbing rhythms and robotic bass crackles giving off classic Techno and Rave vibes.
The second track on the EP is Hard To Breathe, a slightly longer track that also brings a sharper edge to Weston and Teston’s newfound musical direction. This is a tight and restless slab of Techno, evoking the claustrophobia of its title with short stabs of melody and glistening synths that are continuously on the move. Following the drop at around the three-and-a-half-minute mark there’s a tidal wave of dark, fizzling electronics that serves to elevate the whole track, proving to listeners old and new that this duo’s newfound love for Techno meets Future Rave music is something they’re taking very seriously.
Last up on the Weston and Teston – Control EP is the extended version of the title track, and if the original version made you want to dance then this version is going to make you want to throw on your best ‘90s outfit and get yourself to the nearest rave. It’s a tense but spectacular five minutes that also closes this new Weston and Teston EP nicely. No doubt the Yellowheads’ label Reload Records is going to be eagerly awaiting the huge response they’re bound to receive about the Control EP – just as listeners will no doubt be eagerly awaiting the follow-up.
