Dubstep meets Leftfield Bass and Trap music in this exciting new song from diverse Manchester-based DJ Rohaan. Making his debut in 2020, the York-born producer has since released music on high profile labels including MAD ZOO, Vision, and Hospital, and earned numerous UKF awards including Artist of the Year. His new record Rohaan – Sticks & Stones, meanwhile, is the latest in a line of numerous singles he’s released via HARD Records, living up to the name of the label with its heavy bass-driven feel, and matching the quality of his previous releases for the label including Pavlov’s Dogs.
The track is built chiefly around two sections. The first utilises a distinctive distorted vocal sample, with heavy amounts of echo added to increase the cavernous sound of this formidable track. The second section occasionally retains these samples but is mainly focused around the use of room-shaking bass that’s so powerful and potent it’s guaranteed to blow away any cobwebs. Alternating between these sections throughout Sticks & Stones, Rohaan successfully builds a track that is both forceful and driving in its delivery, but which is also capable of surprising listeners. The highlight of the track, for instance, is an unexpected section that begins around a minute in, which sees everything stripped away except for a few snatches of rhythm and that unbelievably catchy vocal sample slathered with a whole lot of echo.
In short, on Rohaan – Sticks & Stones, this talented young artist reveals he has a knack not just for deep, irrepressible grooves and typical Dubstep production, but also that he takes an idiosyncratic stance to these elements of his music. Subsequently, the fact that in the past he’s been referred to as an “envelope-pushing producer and the UK’s pick of the bass music litter” is no surprise; it’s something he’s proven beyond doubt on this boundary pushing new song where Dubstep meets Leftfield Bass & Trap music.
