Insomniac Records’ Techno music label Factory93 has an immaculate reputation, being recognised worldwide as a label that promotes “untethered creativity”. This is certainly evidenced in the label’s latest release, BEC – Retox, which sees London-born, Germany-based Rebecca Godfrey unleash her latest infectious slab of relentless, peak-time Techno. And whilst it’s always great to hear new music from BEC, 2024 seems as though it’s set to be her best year yet, given that she has already released three well-received singles and has gigs in places as varied as Ibiza, Sydney and New York fast approaching.
BEC – Retox, meanwhile, sets the pace from the very beginning, using a relentlessly pounding kick drum and heavily distorted vocals to create a dark, heavy atmosphere. The track proceeds to alternate between minimalistic sections – at times featuring nothing more than the kick drum and vocal samples commanding listeners to “do it again” – and more heavily layered sections comprising grumbling bass synths and stabs of warped electronic melody. But although BEC – Retox veers palpably between these distinct sections throughout, it never loses its piercing sharpness, and as such is bound to appeal to both pre-existing fans of the artist, and fans of Insomniac Records’ Techno music label Factory93. In fact, the only time the track’s dark, pent-up energy is diminishes is right at the end, when its thunderous Techno beat dissolves into thin air, encouraging listeners to hit that repeat button.
In our eyes, BEC – Retox, is one of the high points of this producer’s career so far, along with previous highlights such as Bring Me Up, Be Here Now and Phantasy. We can’t wait to to hear more new music from BEC throughout 2024, or indeed to see where her palpable talents take her next.
