With so little information about them online, many listeners of the new Brazilian Funk and House EP titled project_0 have been left wondering who the artist, _ophelioo, actually is. But whilst we probably won’t be finding out the answer to that question any time soon, what we do know is that the two tracks on this EP, Intero and Mona Lisa, are excellent examples of how effortlessly Brazilian Funk’s infectious rhythms can be combined with the hypnotic grooves of House.

Opening with Intero, _ophelioo immediately establishes the rhythmic focus of this EP, which is their only release on Spotify to date. The track is driven by a tight, repetitive groove, with the percussion providing most of its momentum while the production leaves enough space for each element to make an impact. Aside from its distinctive metallic synths, there is a stripped-back quality this song, with repetition rather than big drops or layers of melody serving to draw you in.
Mona Lisa takes a similarly rhythm-led approach, but feels a little more playful in its execution. The Brazilian Funk influence is particularly apparent in the percussion, which gives the track its distinctive bounce, while the House elements provide a steadier foundation underneath, and the quirky vocal samples are pushed to the forefront. Rather than trying to cram too much into its relatively compact runtime of two and a half minutes, _ophelioo allows the groove to do most of the work here.
Featuring just two tracks, this Brazilian Funk and House EP project_0 is hardly enough to reveal who _ophelioo actually is. It does, however, offer a promising glimpse of what they can do. With the two main genres featured continuing to find increasingly inventive ways of crossing paths, _ophelioo’s ability to bring the two together so naturally makes this a release worth keeping an eye on – or indeed an ear.
