Maya Fourteen – Uniqueness is the much-awaited debut single from this up-and-coming Brazilian producer. Featuring spoken word vocals from self-declared “intuitive life coach” Francesca Posgai, the track was handpicked by German-born DJ and producer Marc Romboy to feature on a 20th-anniversary release from his iconic label Systematic Recordings. Romboy first heard the track at the Ibiza Get Signed Summit, and instantly fell in love with its distinctive sound and empowering energy. “It’s a throwback to the golden era of House, evoking timeless vibes akin to Mood II Swing” he said recently, summing up much of what it is that makes you want to add Maya Fourteen – Uniqueness to your playlists as soon as you hear it.
The track kicks off with an unmistakable beat, its deep grooves and solid, hypnotic rhythms ensuring listeners get hooked right from the start. The groove remains the same throughout almost the entirety of the track’s four-minute duration, evolving every so often (with the addition of an extra synth harmony, for instance, or an additional pulse of melody) to represent the progression of the song. Undoubtedly the most significant element of Maya Fourteen – Uniqueness, however, is Francesca Posgai emphatic spoken-word vocal, which takes the form of an inspirational monologue that slots in nicely alongside the track’s Deep House rhythms. “As we all can see clearly the old world is dying / and the new world is here” announces Posgai in the track, “you have a job to do in your own individual uniqueness”.
Whether or not you agree with Posgai’s passionately-delivered statements within the song, it is hard to disagree that Maya Fourteen – Uniqueness represents an interesting turn in the field of Deep House music. It adheres to many of the genre’s key tenets, but also brings a highly distinctive sound to the table, and one that surely showcases Maya Fourteen’s commitment to creating music steeped in both artistry and versatility.
