Right now, you might know New York DJ Layton Giordani best from tracks like Freaks at Night, When I Push, or even collaborative efforts such as his fiery take on Loofy’s Last Night with fellow New Yorker Anyma. That might be about to change, however, with the artist’s latest release Dom Dolla – girl$ (Layton Giordani Remix), that you might recognize from the extremely catchy lyrics “girls, don’t need nobody”, a truly massive remix in every sense of the word.
Building on the relatively stripped back feel of the original – which was released just a matter of weeks ago – Dom Dolla – girl$ (Layton Giordani Remix) brings a whole new feeling of intensity to the track, pushing Caitlin Stubbs’ uncredited vocals to the forefront and adding huge pulsing synths to boost the track’s energy levels. Interestingly, Giordani also opts to remove most of the distortion that featured on the vocals in the original, perhaps in order to add some additional depth of emotion to the track and really draw his listeners in. Whatever his reasons, it certainly worked, with Stubbs’ slightly less processed vocals in the remix adding to the song’s overall potency, even being left unaccompanied for a portion of the track in order to increase the intensity of the subsequent bass-heavy drop. The use of warm, atmospheric pads is also unique to Giordani’s remix, and again appear to have been utilised in order to emphasise the artist’s heavier, darker, and punchier tendencies.
Dom Dolla’s original version of girl$ is an exciting, empowering House track that journalist Rachel Narozniak has since accurately described as “like a shot of pure adrenaline”. But this remix has turned the track into nothing short of a hot-headed, full-blooded floor filler, with the artist cherry-picking those parts of the track that make it so exciting and adrenaline-inducing, and blending them into a slicker, tighter, and arguably more potent Techno-flavoured remix.
