Tallulah Rendall isn’t exactly what you’d call a ‘typical’ artist that we cover here at EKM. Working as a Qigong teacher and sound therapist alongside her music career, right now Rendall operates primarily within the genres of Alt-Folk and Acoustic, possessing “a unique ability to craft melodies that mend and uplift the human heart”. But don’t look away just yet readers, because the track we want to share with you today undoubtedly falls under the EKM remit. It’s called Tallulah Rendall – The Heart Sutra (Brutal Deluxe Remix), and it comes as part of a highly interesting project that sees Rendall collaborate with renowned producer and DJ Brutal Deluxe to turn her acoustic tracks into blistering Melodic House and Techno anthems.
Tallulah Rendall – The Heart Sutra (Brutal Deluxe Remix) starts off slow, perhaps in order to acclimatize listeners to the unlikely combination it presents. Yet in reality, no acclimatization is actually necessary, with Rendall’s ethereal vocals sitting perfectly on top of the Afro and House beats that Brutal Deluxe introduces throughout the track. After its gentle introduction, the track really gets going at around 45 seconds in, with the rumbling of single bass notes turning into a solid House beat and propelling Rendall to the front of the mix in the process. From here, the track’s energy levels increase tenfold, with Brutal Deluxe adding additional Afro-flavored percussion and rich layers of harmonies to widen its sound. There are numerous moments where The Heart Sutra settles down into its initial, more chilled out state, meanwhile, these moments are well placed and as such, serve to add extra emphasis to the more upbeat, energetic moments.
It’s difficult to deny that this remix of The Heart Sutra presents an unusual combination of sounds and styles – but throughout the track’s five-and-a-half-minute duration, there is rarely a moment where these styles are not working together in harmony to present us with what can only be described as both an exciting and unique listening experience.
