Brazilian-born, Barcelona-based producer Joanna Coelho has become one of the key representatives of the Catalan Techno scene in recent years, on account of fiery releases including Demon, Damn, and the Make You Move EP. Her new release, the Joanna Coelho – No Drugz EP, is sure to continue the trend for this talented artist, bringing her unmistakable Hard Techno vibes to the two energetic, catchy tracks that make up this release.
First up on the Joanna Coelho – No Drugz EP is the title track, a track that spans multiple genres and consequently ends up sitting somewhere between Industrial, Hard Techno and Neo-Rave. No Drugz is dominated by its huge kick drum, which runs throughout the majority of the track’s five-minute duration, and gives it that hardcore Industrial feel. Elsewhere there are vibrant, siren-esque synths that keep the energy pulsing, as well as brief flashes of a female vocal (“LSD / cocaine / ecstasy”) that keep the track firmly grounded. When combined, these elements ensure that No Drugz is a track ready-made for the dancefloor, and really rams home Joanna’s message of “once a raver, always a raver”.
The second and final track on the EP is titled Wide Awake, which continues the multi-genre feel of the previous track but which is also more heavily focused on vocals. Indeed, it’s the male vocal (“drop the bass and hide away / I got money every day”) that keeps the track’s energy levels high, with the builds-ups and drops working around the intricacies of this vocal. That thundering kick drum is still present too (would it really be a Joanna Coelho track without it?), as are layers of gritty synths that lend Wide Awake that extra rave-centric flavor.
All in all, the Joanna Coelho – No Drugz EP is well worth a listen if you like your Hard Techno imbued with an extra layer of energy and passion, and as such we’re sure that this release is bound to appeal to both new and existing fans of this talented producer.
