Bucharest-born artist and producer Marius Copel will perhaps be better known to electronic music listeners as Electrons In Slow Motion, and fans will no doubt be delighted to know that he has just released a brand new album called Mekanikaru, which brings together elements of cinematic Electronica, Glitch, Ambient, and Neo-Industrial music. Additionally, and as this review will hopefully reveal, Mekanikaru clearly matches up to and even occasionally surpasses the quality of previous Electrons In Slow Motion releases, such as Tughra 0.04, ANSC, and Breaking Eleusis.
🔊 Mekanikaru as a Cinematic Electronica Album Narrative
Mekanikaru unfolds less like a conventional 13-song album and more like a carefully constructed soundtrack to a futuristic sci-fi film. From the dramatic opener Access Codes to the contemplative closer Wild Will Flow, the album seems to focus on the concept of a metropolis where everything is built around an algorithmic order. Glitch-laden pulses and Neo-Industrial rhythms function as the machinery, while expansive Ambient layers and cinematic motifs suggest the inner lives and the humanity that still flickers within this imagined world. It is this tension between man and machine that forms Mekanikaru’s intense narrative core.
💿 Glitch, Ambient and Neo-Industrial Tension in Mekanikaru
One of the many strengths of this album is the tension it navigates between the wide range of genres its sound encompasses, including Glitch, Ambient, Neo-Industrial, and Electronica. Rather than feeling fragmented, these elements are tightly integrated. Whilst many of the songs are undoubtedly oriented towards the Ambient genre (particularly highlights like Technopolis and Tatami Elevation), there are often elements of other genres, such as metallic percussion, grinding low-end textures, or mechanical loops, that linger beneath the surface, creating a sense of pressure and forward momentum.
All in all then, and as we hope this review has shown you, the new Electrons in Slow Motion album Mekanikaru is one of the best examples of cinematic Electronica that we have heard this year, offering a richly textured and genre-blending listening experience that is both immersive and highly memorable.
