Trans artist Buggy has just released a Hard Dance album called Sissy Pt 1, and we are sure that it is set to become a landmark release in the current queer electronic music scene.
Accompanied by a memorable ARG campaign, Sissy Pt 1 by Buggy runs for eight songs and clocks in at just 26 minutes, but its relatively short runtime does not mean it deserves any less of your attention. Packed with cutting synths, danceable rhythms, and hardcore beats, the album is intended to document the paranoia, fear, and resilience that come with navigating life as a queer trans woman in Southern America.
Indeed, from the album’s opening moments, Buggy establishes a world of tension and unease. First track The Scream erupts with distorted textures and pounding percussion, whilst elsewhere Demon Time embraces the more uncompromising side of the genre. What makes Sissy Pt. 1 particularly compelling, however, is its balance between intensity and vulnerability. Tracks such as Sunset on the Balds introduce more atmospheric elements, while the closing Dawn expands into a more hopeful and melodic finale. In this sense, Sissy Pt 1 is a concise yet powerful Hard Dance album that cements Buggy as one of the most exciting voices currently working in queer electronic music.
How Buggy’s Sissy pt 1 ARG Campaign Extends the Chaos
But the album’s themes do not stop at the music. Alongside the release, Buggy has launched an ARG campaign centred around 100 hidden “Sissy Buckets” placed throughout her city. Fans can locate the buckets through shared coordinates, with each containing a disturbing message, a signed Pokémon card, and a warning to keep the bucket and all its contents or face a “very bad fortune”.
The bucket itself has become a central piece of the album’s mythology. Its imagery originates from a photograph taken at a lube wrestling competition, where Buggy challenged a fellow contestant to a face-off due to his tattoos. Equal parts absurd and confrontational, it perfectly reflects the antagonistic spirit that runs throughout her work. Those who bring a bucket to a live show, meanwhile, are granted lifelong membership to “The Hive”, turning listeners into active participants in Buggy’s world. The ARG campaign is strange, chaotic, and impossible to ignore, rendering it a fitting extension of trans artist Buggy and her inventive Hard Dance queer electronic album.
